Peninsula Chimneys, Hillside Homes& Native StoneChimney and masonry care for Rancho Palos Verdes, Palos Verdes Estates, Rolling Hills and San Pedro

On the Peninsula the homes sit on slopes facing the Pacific. In parts of Portuguese Bend the ground itself is moving, ocean wind drives rain sideways under roof tiles, and many ranch houses carry chimneys and walls built from local Palos Verdes stone. Palos Verdes Peninsula Chimney & Masonry handles all three: chimneys separating from moving houses, native stone repair, and leaks on steep tile roofs. We work out of South Western Avenue, and the dispatch line answers 24/7.

Pull the slider: before and after

Each frame holds one chimney before and after the work. Slide sideways, or select the handle and press the arrow keys.

After: chimney rebuilt in new red brick with a crown and a light-colored cap
Before: chimney with loose bricks, open joints and holes in the brickwork

Racked by movement, rebuilt plumb

Ground movement and age had twisted and opened this stack. We rebuilt it straight from the roof, tied it to the framing and added a crown and cap.

After: new red brick chimney with a stainless cap and metal flashing
Before: discolored chimney with growth on the brick and a stained roof

Fog-soaked brick, made new

Constant marine layer kept this chimney wet and stained. The new one has fresh brick, a stainless cap and tight flashing, done along with a reroof.

Land movement

When the house moves, the chimney moves differently

Gaps at the siding

The landslide areas around Portuguese Bend have sped up in recent years. A heavy chimney on its own footing can lean away from a house that's moving another way.

Offset flue tiles

Movement can shift the clay tiles inside out of line, which a camera picks up long before it shows outside.

Track it over time

We measure tilt and gap width and come back to re-check, so you have a record for engineers and insurers.

Lighter options

Where a masonry chimney keeps fighting the ground, a framed chase with a metal flue weighs far less.

Local material

Palos Verdes stone, repaired the right way

The layered buff-and-tan stone quarried on the Peninsula shows up on chimneys, planters and garden walls across the South Bay. It's soft and flaky, so it needs different handling from brick.

ASSESS

Find the failing layers

Pieces that are flaking or hollow behind the face get marked for removal.

SOURCE

Match the color

Replacement stone is chosen to match the buff, rust or gray tones already on the house.

SET

Flat beds, soft mortar

Stones are laid flat on their natural bedding with mortar softer than the stone, so the mortar takes the wear.

REVIEW

Design approvals

Palos Verdes Estates exterior changes go before its Art Jury. We prepare samples and photos.

Ocean wind & tile roofs

Rain that blows sideways

Storms off the ocean push water up and under barrel tiles and into any weak spot around a chimney. Ceiling stains often show up a room away from the real leak.

Barrel tile careful

We lift and stack tiles around the chimney, re-flash and reset them, with spares for any that break.

Crickets behind wide stacks

A small saddle behind the chimney sends water around it instead of letting it pool.

Breathable sealer

Water repellent on the brick or stone keeps blowing rain from soaking in.

Harnessed crews

Steep pitches and tall views mean every tech is tied off on the roof.

What Peninsula owners ask

Still wondering? Call (424) 272-8858, day or night.

Is the dispatch line really staffed overnight?

It is. Any hour, a real dispatcher can get a crew moving for a chimney tilting off a moving house, debris falling from a stack in high wind, or a leak during a storm. Smelling gas, seeing smoke inside or hearing a CO alarm? Leave first and dial 911.

There's a gap between my chimney and the wall. Is that dangerous?

It can be. A gap means the chimney and house are moving apart, and the flue may be damaged inside. Don't use the fireplace until it's checked.

Our neighborhood has land movement. Should we rebuild in brick?

Often not. A framed chase with a metal flue is much lighter and copes with movement better. We'll show you both options.

Can you match Palos Verdes stone?

Yes. We work with Peninsula stone regularly and match color and layering to what's on your home.

Do you handle Art Jury and city approvals?

We supply drawings, samples and photos for the Palos Verdes Estates Art Jury and city permits when the work needs them.

Will you break our roof tiles?

We take every precaution and bring spares. Any tile we break, we replace.

Which communities do you serve?

Rancho Palos Verdes, Palos Verdes Estates, Rolling Hills, Rolling Hills Estates, Miraleste, Portuguese Bend, Lunada Bay, Ladera Linda, San Pedro, Lomita, Harbor City, Torrance and Redondo Beach.
